What is the best time of year to visit Libya?

You can visit Libya all year round but the best time is between September and May, in our winter season when the average temperature is around 22 C. You can see beautiful wild flowers and the days are not too hot. Summer is for people who like very hot weather, when the temperature is about 34 C, while the autumn is like spring.

How can I get a visa?

You need a letter of invitation from a reputable Tourism organization in Libya to give to the Libyan Embassy in your country. Alternatively the Tourism organization can arrange for you to get a visa on arrival at Tripoli. You can also use this process to get a visa if you arrive by ship, at the borders, or if you fly to Benghazi, or direct to the South.

What accommodation can I expect in Libya?

The main cities in Libya are now equipped with good hotels . Accommodation ranges from world class luxury five star hotels in Tripoli like the Corinthia Hotel, to clean, comfortable and luxurious hotels in places like the ancient desert city of Ghadames, to simpler but comfortable three star hotels in most places and tented camps in the desert.

Can I drink the water?

We advise you to drink bottled mineral water which is available everywhere.

What food will I eat?

Libya is a Muslim country and so the food includes lamb, chicken and camel in delicious soups and stews, good bread, including barley bread and Italian breads because of the Italian influence, excellent locally grown vegetables, dates, figs, apricots and almonds in season.

What will I drink?

Alcohol is banned but there is an excellent range of pure fruit juices, both local and imported, and non-alcohol beers.

What should I wear?

Men and women are advised to dress modestly. Women should therefore wear tops that cover their shoulders and arms such as a T-shirt, and skirts or trousers that cover most of their legs. However women are not required to wear scarves covering their heads.

I only have a weekend - what can I see?

You can see the splendid capital of Tripoli with its ancient souks and the magnificent city of Leptis Magna, UNESCO World Heritage site, where you will find some of the world’s greatest Greek, Roman and Byzantium ruins.

I only have a week - what can I see?

You can see in addition to Tripoli and Leptis Magna, the ancient Greek city of Sabratha and the enchanting desert town of Ghadames, built round a medieval spring.

You will have time for Tripoli, Ghadames, Leptis Magna, the beautiful green Akakous mountains and the Lakes.

Is there public transport?

Buses and also taxis are available but in general tourists prefer the convenience of transport in a comfortable car with a driver who speaks their language. You will find the cost very reasonable. ALSIRAJ Travel can arrange this for you.

Should I tip the guides?

NO, it is not an customary in Libya, but if you do it will not upset them.

Can I get an internet connection for my laptop?

There are good Internet connections available in all the cities and the cost per hour is cheap.

Will my mobile telephone work in Libya?

Mobile telephones will work in Libya ; most of PTT European companies have links with the Libyan PTT.

What currency should I bring to Libya?

The euro is the most appreciated currency in Libya but the US dollar is also accepted.

Can I change money outside Tripoli and if so where?

It is recommended that you change money in Tripoli.

Which day of the week do banks and shops close?

Friday is the official day when banks and shops are closed but most of shops will open in the afternoon.

Do banks open on Saturday?

Yes, they are opened from 9h to 12h on Saturday.

What are the best things to see in Libya?

The people: they are very friendly and welcoming, Leptis Magna, the mountains of Akakous, Ghadames, the eastern region around Benghazi called Cyrenaique where there are many sites containing the ruins of Greek, Byzantine and Roman civilizations. These include Tokra, Ptolemais, Barka, Gasr Libya, Slantha, Cyrene, Appolonia, Atrun and Ras El Hilal.

In addition World War 2 historians will be interested in visiting Tobruk.

Do people in Libya speak any of the European languages?

Some English , French or Italian and a few speak German .
